A Message from the Holy Father for Bishop McKeown’s Silver Jubilee

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of his episcopal ordination, Bishop Donal McKeown received a message and Apostolic Blessing from the Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV.

Presented during the Jubilee Mass in St Eugene's Cathedral, the message recognises Bishop Donal's years of faithful pastoral ministry and offers prayer, encouragement and blessing for him and for the Diocese of Derry.

The Apostolic Blessing

To Our Venerable Brother
DONAL McKEOWN
Bishop of Derry

On the occasion of the Silver Jubilee of your Episcopal Ordination, I congratulate you on your long years of pastoral ministry which you have exercised so diligently, firstly, as Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Down and Connor, and then, as Bishop of the See of Derry, along with your zealous labours in proclaiming the Gospel of "truth in charity".

While I express my best wishes to you, and accompany you with my prayers, I also implore for you a reward in heaven.

From my heart, I bestow on you my Apostolic Blessing, as well as on your clergy, the laity and the members of your family.

Given at the Vatican on 26th March 2026.

(Signed)
Pope Leo XIV

A Moment of Grace for the Diocese

This message from the Holy Father is a source of encouragement not only for Bishop Donal, but for the priests, people and communities of the Diocese of Derry whom he serves.

It recognises years of faithful ministry and points to the heart of that service — proclaiming the Gospel with truth and charity.
