The Diocese of Derry in conjunction with Youth Link are offering a training course for adults interested in leading youth projects. This course will be a Level 2 Certificate in Youth Work Practice and it will run on Saturdays and Wednesdays commencing Wednesday, 4 March in Maghera Pastoral Centre, Maghera, Derry.

Course overview
The OCN NI Level 2 qualifications in Youth Work Practice enable learners to develop knowledge and practical skills to deliver quality youth work. These qualifications can also provide progression opportunities from Award to Certificate and also to a level 3 qualification in youth work. These qualifications are recognised by Ulster University and will assist learners to apply for the Level 4 Certificate in Youth Studies and the BSc (Hons) Community Youth Work.

Learners must be over the age of 18 and currently volunteering or working in a youth work setting.
The qualification is comprised of 10 units:
- Principles and values of youth work practice.
- Understand the developmental needs of young people within youth work.
- Effective communication skills in a youth work setting.
- Understand the role of the youth worker.
- Safeguarding young people in a youth work setting.
- Managing challenging behaviour in a youth work setting.
- Group development within youth work programmes.
- Facilitating activity-based youth work programmes.
- Planning an activity-based youth work programme.
- 1Evaluating activity-based youth work programmes
Each unit is delivered through interactive workshops and assessed by a portfolio of written evidence, which is developed over the period of the qualification delivery. A minimum of 80% attendance is required, although full attendance is recommended due to the participative nature of the workshops.
